A deliciously unpredictable start to the tennis year, sums up the current unseasonal weather here in Sydney – The clouds and thunder cracks – mixed with record temperatures along the coast in Melbourne before the Australian Open.
And in the courts of the East, the first two weeks of the season, we have a 15-year-old Briton, which is for the world number 26, one Henin / Clijsters classic final to undo the years, a Title for a player before the suspension just days before, and murmur of a new tennis "World Cup" chug To Off-Court engines. Delicious indeed.
So, where do I start?
The ubiquitous Nikolay Davydenko seems to be the man of the moment on the ATP Tour. This man, I keep my hands and admit, is pretty amazing.
His relentless pursuit of points is, the pound and rates now backed by a lively brand of flat and furiously beat the wins in Doha, back-to-back Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal claimed the Qatar Open, the perfect follow up to his 2009 season-ending win success at the ATP World Tour Finals in London.
Perhaps this last scalp will dare him the faith to the next step and win a large (about his victory was Federer's second in three months, after seven years of trying in vain against the Swiss), but it's a long shot for the title because of the talent from him.
Nadal, Aussie of the defending Open champion, is ready to prove that his concerns are at the end of 2009 behind him. Some additional depth to his balls, even – especially his Return to serve – was felt in the first weeks of 2010.
Federer will be back in view of the title he won recently in 2007, is Juan Martin Del Potro for back-to-back majors (not out of the question, go with whatever means) and Andy Murray will put some extra bite behind his forehand cross, though recent evidence to judge, in his search for a debut Slam.
Add the love of Djokovic, Roddick, Tsonga, Soderling and Verdasco and this could be a classic Tournament will be.
The women's event has an extra pinch of turmeric, thanks to the return of Justine Henin in a Wild Card. Like compatriot Kim Clijsters at last year's level of U.S. Open Henin is quite capable of going all the way and win the title.
You may have learned from the Sydney event with a leg injury, but she was on the practice Courts as soon as they arrived in Melbourne looking, fit and determined.
And the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour struggle for a better coordination host this year than last Belgian pair in the contested Brisbane, at the end of Henin comeback week.
About two hours and 23 minutes, they played a greatest hits collection of a game, complete with Henin Clijsters comeback from dead positions before they edged 8-6 in the deciding tie-break. Stunning stuff.
After a few mediocre years with the stuttering attempts govern by Safina, Ivanovic and Jankovic, the world, we have set the two Williams sisters and the two Belgians deny the gravity matches. As in the old days.
This is not to write off the next generation. Far from it. I appreciate you seeing further progress in 2010 from the likes of Wozniacki, Azarenka, Lisicki, Oudin and the other 15 or 16 years we have not even heard.
